September is Suicide Prevention Month.

This is a time to raise awareness, spread hope, and share important information to those affected by suicide. September is also a month to remember the lives lost to suicide and support their families and loved ones.

ALL of us can help prevent suicide – we all play an important role in connecting with our communities, collaborate with others, and address this mental health issue that has impacted millions of people.

How can you help?

1. Learn the warning signs of suicide. While suicide is complex, there are some signs we can watch out for. These include expressing hopelessness, withdrawing from normal social connections, talking about being a burden to others, changes in sleep, or making plans for suicide.

2. Equip yourself with ways to support. There are five action steps for communicating with someone who may be suicidal – Ask, Be there, Help Keep Them Safe, Help Them Connect, and Follow Up. For more information on how to be supportive, click here.

3. Know the resources available. There are many lifelines available, both local and national, to connect you with trained crisis counsellors. Call or text 988 if you or someone you know is struggling. You can also text “4hope” to 741 741 to be connected with a counselor. The local crisis call center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-468-4357.

Being prepared to help prevent suicide can make all the difference – this Suicide Prevention Month, equip yourself with the tools necessary to keep your community safe.
